Raided by vikings when it was nothing more than a pictish fort. Then seized by King Edward I. Even William Wallace took the castle and locked the englishmen in the chapel then burning it and them to ashes. Imprisonment, torture, murder, warfare and host to some of histories most recognised men. Dunnottar Castle in recognised as one of Scotland’s most historic and haunted locations, with apparitions and screams of terror heard and seen constantly. But is it any wonder ?

Ghost Hunting At Dunnottar Castle
Dunnottar Castle has been host to alot of murder, bloodshed and violence. This is normally a perfect situation for regular hauntings. And it would seem this is just the case with Dunnottar Castle, with ghost sightings being regular.
The Whigs
The Castle’s infamous Dungeon nicknamed the whigs. This part of the castle has seen toture and cruelty on daily basis. In the year of 1685, 160 men, women and children where carted of to Dunnottar castle as political prisoners, no doubt they where most likely innocent. However the guards had no mercy for whom they considered enemies of the crown. Stuffed into a tiny, and icey cold room and fed with rotten fish and meat and given nothing to drink but sea water. Some died and some attempted escape down the sheer cliff. Needless to say not to many of them survived. There screams echo through the grounds in the dead of night heard time and time again by many a passing tourist. When down in The Whigs there is an overwhelming sense of dread and sadness. No doubt this is a residual haunting, but still a haunting nonetheless. The Whigs look just the same today as they did during the tyrant’s reign.
Inside The Ruins
A number of sightings have been reported in this location. A Viking man, a lonely guard and a wandering young girl. Some incredible photos have been taken in this part of the castle also capturing full body apparitions. In one photo it would seem the man is looking straight at the photographer. Due to the brutal scottish wind it is hard to hear anything, and it gives sceptics plenty of reasonable explanations so this is a hard location to gather evidence. But that hasn’t stopped investigators yet. Tourists have often fled the castle after looking around the castle’s interior. Some even reported hearing a sharp human hissing in there ear and feeling the warmth of the breath. Along with people being sharply nudged and felt a rush of energy passing through them.
The Grounds
The Site where the castle’s chapel stood, before William Wallace himself burned it to the ground with countless english troops locked inside. Along with some of scotland’s most infamous witches being burned to the stake. Not to mention the countless sieges of the castle, where the enemy corpse would also be stacked in heaps and burned. The Castle and the Interior see similar activity, apart from the malicious forces in the grounds. Tourists have often felt burning sensations around there backs and arms, then upon investigation later they see scratches. Screams, Wails of terror, mirthless laughter and countless apparitions are all part of the castle grounds. Just to think you could actually be standing still on the ash of some of the unfortunate souls. That cant make them all to happy.
We see alot that when a person has not been given a proper burial they arise from the dead to terrify the living. Especially when it comes to executions or murder. So dont get to close to the edge and watch your step.
Ghosts of Dunnottar Castle
. The Green Lady
. Tall Scandinavian Man
. Ghost Guard
. The Burned Witches
. Phantom Pooch
Dunnottar Castle is one of the most haunted locations in Scotland thanks to its resident ghosts. With any location so steeped in a history built on death its not much of a surprise how often these forgotten men and women are seen.
The Green Lady
There is a young girl often seen wandering the grounds of the ruin. No there is certainty to who she is but sightings are common. She has been seen in a dull green tartan dress, typical dress of the scottish women during the pictish era. She is most often seen in the former bakery and the grounds. Still who was she ? A lord’s daughter ? Perhaps a prisoner ? All we can do is wonder, unless we take along a evp recorder and start asking questions.
Tall Scandinavian Man
There is a tall man with long blonde hair and described to have scars on his face , often seen in the main entrance of the castle walking down into what used to be the guards room. But when people try to follow or question him, he simply disappears into thin air. The Current building actually stands on the ground of an earlier Pictish Fort which was raided and burned to the ground by viking hoards during the 9th century. The Vikings where known for being a brutish race of people. So it would only seem logical to give this man the credit for the physical activity within the ruins. But again this could just be the residual energy of a man killed during one of the many sieges in the Dunnottar History.
The Ghostly Guard
There has been a guard dressed in early scottish armour sighted standing on the edge surveying the see. Again this could well be residual. He is also seen down in the entrance of the secret passageway that leads onto the steps etched into the cliff.
The Witches
The Year of 1595 saw several of Scotland’s most infamous witches, feared for there devotion the the devil, captured, imprisoned and then burned at the stake whilst cursing the men who where doing so. We see sites across the world where satanists have been executed, and then came back to haunt the location in a horror movie fashion. The only logical reason therefore, behind the malicious entities in the grounds, with records of burn marks, scratches, and the mirthless laughter can only be accounted to these insidious few.
Although there it not alot of information on the ghosts of Dunnottar Castle, there is no doubt that this location is home to a phenomenal amount of activity both visual and physical, but there are still mysterious within this ancient scottish Fortress.
