Hampton Court Palace

Favourite home of King Henry VIII, but as we all know this monarch had a hobby of executing his wives. One of them still lingers here, the unfortunate Catherine Howard. Hampton court palace has given us some amazing evidence, now although we can’t be sure if the famous evidence captured here was simply a publicity stunt. One thing is for sure this is one of britain’s most haunted places.

Ghost Hunt at Hampton Court Palace

Ghost Hunting At Hampton Court Palace

Some haunted locations just seem too good to be true, but when the stories you hear have the solid evidence to back them up, the excitement starts to build more and more. These phantoms have some strange habits, what what we love the most they are far from camera shy. The photo of Hampton Galleries Grey Lady, and the video of ” Skeletor ” are two breathtaking results of pure accident.

The castle is active both day and night, with all staff members having there own experiences that defiantly shook there believes. Hampton Court Palace for the majority of the day has the sound of a tudor spinning wheel running through its 1500 separate chambers. Recently discovered behind a sealed door, when you look upon the wheel itself spinning it stops suddenly and rushed footsteps are soon to follow. Coincidence that the use of this item of the favourite pastime of Sybil Penn one of the castles supussoed grey ladies ?

Although the castle is so strong in all your usual activity ( footsteps, whispered voices etc … ) it is also no stranger to poltergeist activity. One member of staff even witnessed a set of plates violently shaking. Some of the activity does frighten the staff tho as the spirit of Catherine Howard is said to float 2ft of the ground and have dirty hair down to her lower back, as would any person the workers are shook after there experiences. But as always activity attracts us ghost hunters. So the palace started offering up all night ghost hunts with a local medium to make a quick penny. Although these events are a great success and no doubt there is a lot of ghostly activity happening here during the night. There was some trouble in the beginning, during a time when only the palace director knew of these ghost hunts, when he alone was planning them. A fax appeared in the machine wrote in a strange handwriting, almost childlike ‘You’re messing with forces you don’t understand,’ it read. ‘Don’t disturb the red room.’ To good to be true?

The most famous evidence caught here is that of the castles so rightly names Skeletor. When reviewing security footage for three nights running the fire doors would swing open with a force and then close again on random intervals, then on the last night this phenomena occurred these cameras caught something shocking. An almost perfect full body apparition of a ghostly man in his long tudor robes closing the doors after he or someone else so violently opening them, King Henry Himself ? There can be no doubt in our minds that this location is haunted, and activity is frequent day and night. Hampton court palace was home to one of the most striking characters in history and like any ancient palace, it has had its share of trauma and sadness which always leaves an imprint of the the ones that once lived here. But only you can decide if you believe in the stories and if you dont come and check it out yourself

 Ghosts Of Hampton Court Palace

Ghosts Of  Hampton Court Palace

. Catherine Howard
. Sybil Penn
. ” Skeletor “
. Richard & Edward

Although Hampton Court Palace is haunted by countless spirits due to its vast size and history, Catherine Howard is the castle’s most famously active spirit. After King Henry accused his wife of adultery, which coincidentally never proven, Catherine began to sprint to his chambers to plead with the king of her innocence and for her life. Only to be dragged by her hair to one of the castles securiest chambers where she would then spend the remainder of her days until being wrongfully executed at the tower of london. She appears as a towering figure frightening the life out of staff and guests alike, She is one of the castles Grey Ladies which incidentally we find in a lot of haunted buildings ( a grey lady ). But Women from a long passed age where buried in morning colours of grey of black, got to make you wonder.

The second Grey Lady is that of Sybil Penn who cared for many members of the royal family, until contracted one of the diseases she was nursing the queen for herself, then dying shortly afterwards. It is believed that Sybil is the cause of the Spine wheel that is always found running as if by unseen hands, it was her favourite hobby after all. Visitors have reported seeing her walking down the main staircase, proud and strong.

Prince Edward and Richard are the palaces resident poltergeists. But they are more camera shy, after being murdered by there uncle to gain the throne of england outright by killing of the only two remaining aires. I would imagine they are still scared of adults. They still play around Hampton Court Palace, child’s laughing is often heard around the halls but upon trying to discover the sounds origin scurried footsteps are heard, running in the opposite direction. Of one the children who recently lived in the bloody tower ( location where the princes where supposedly murdered ) even told his father ” I dont like the two kids who play outside”.

Until recently about 200 years ago there where constant sightings of male ghosts in the palace, and women where rarely seen. So we have to think on where these spirits disappeared to. But in 2003 a startling piece of evidence came to light and ¨ Skeletor ” was introduced to the palace. One of the best full body apparitions ive ever seen ( see below in videos ) right beside Hamptons Grey Lady photo.

Ghost stories from Hampton Court Palace

Hampton Court Palace has been the setting for many dramatic royal events over the last 500 years, including the death of Henry VIII’s third wife, Jane Seymour and the imprisonment of his fifth wife, Katherine Howard.

It is no wonder then that visitors and staff alike have experienced unusual phenomena within its walls. Perhaps one of the most famous stories is that of Katherine Howard’s screaming spectre.

On 30 October 1541, Thomas Cranmer informed Henry, via a letter, that his new Queen was accused of ‘dissolute living before her marriage with Francis Dereham’. The King ordered Cranmer to thoroughly investigate the claims and confined Katherine to her apartments with only Lady Rochford to attend her.

It is said that Katherine broke free from her captors and ran down the corridor, toward the private chapel where Henry was at Mass, to beg for the King’s mercy. She banged on the door but  unfortunately, Katherine was caught before Henry heard her pleas and dragged back to her apartments screaming and protesting.

We will never know for certain whether these events took place but what is certain is that visitors and staff have reported hearing spectral screams and feeling ‘uneasy’ in the ‘Haunted Gallery’.

On one occasion a female form, dressed in white was seen floating down the Haunted Gallery ‘towards the door of the Royal Pew, and just as she reaches it, has been observed to hurry back with disordered garments and a ghastly look of despair, uttering at the same time the most unearthly shrieks, till she passes through the door at the end of the gallery’. (A Short History of Hampton Court by Ernest Law, 1897)

According to Palace officials, during two separate evening tours one night in 1999, two female visitors fainted on the same spot in the Haunted Gallery only one hour apart. Both women reported feeling frightened and uncomfortable and one so much so that she refused to rejoin the tour.

Other visitors have contacted me personally and reported feeling a presence in the gallery, feeling a sudden drop in temperature, having their hair pulled and one gentleman even felt spectral hands grab him around the neck!

Katherine is not the only one of Henry’s wives said to make herself known at Hampton Court. Jane Seymour, Henry’s third wife, is said to wander the cobbled courtyard of Clock Court carrying a lighted taper.

In the early hours of the 24th October 1537, only 12 days after the birth of Prince Edward, Jane died in her apartments. These apartments no longer exist but Jane has been seen gliding through the cobbled grounds of Clock Court and on the anniversary of the birth of Edward, ascending the stairs leading to the Silver Stick Gallery, dressed in a white robe and carrying a candle.

Unfortunately, the Gallery is not on the public route and so visitors are not permitted to enter this particular apartment.

Perhaps Jane returns in search of the son that she held only so briefly but is there another connected to Prince Edward that also calls Hampton Court home almost 500 years after her death?

Sybil Penn was nurse to Prince Edward and also nursed Elizabeth I through small pox in 1562, only to succumb to the disease shortly afterwards.

Sybil was buried in nearby Hampton Church and according to palace officials; her spirit was disturbed in the 1800’s when the old church was pulled down.  Since that date she is said to have returned to the rooms she lived in at Hampton Court Palace and has become one of the most ‘persistent’ ghosts.

Interestingly, legend has it that after Sybil’s resting place was disturbed, people began hearing the sound of a spinning wheel from behind a wall of the southwest wing of the palace. Upon further investigation, an old chamber was discovered and inside lay an antique spinning wheel…

Sightings of a ‘lady in grey’ are believed to be that of Sybil Penn. She is seen in various Tudor cloisters and courtyards.

Queens and nursemaids are not the only spectral beings said to return to Hampton Court. Visitors and staff often comment on the ‘strange atmosphere’ of the Wolsey Closet.

According to palace officials ‘A dog has been seen and heard in the room on more than one occasion, and the presence of a dog felt by somebody “sensitive” to paranormal activity.’

Most recently a strange image caught on the palaces’ CCTV footage caught the attention of the world.

In October 2003, palace security staff were alerted to an open Fire Door. After investigating and securing the doors the staff returned to inspect the CCTV footage. On the first occasion, the doors flew open without any sign of who or what opened them but on the second occasion, the staff were shocked to find a figure, in what looked like period dress, appear and close the doors. This pattern was repeated on the third day, minus the ghostly figure.

What makes this story even more curious is that on the second day, when the figure was captured on camera, a visitor reported seeing a ghost in that very area in the visitor’s book.

To this day palace officials have no explanation for this ghostly intruder!

Watch the video and decide for yourself.
