Romagnano al Monte : Italy’s Spookiest Ghost Town
The world is filled with ghost towns, from the Wild West to the Himalayas. These places were once prosperous and active sites with hundreds, perhaps thousands of people living within them. But what happens when the gold runs dry? Or natural disaster hits? Romagnano al Monte is one of the world’s highest ghost towns and one of the most silent…
Disaster Strikes
The Abandoned town of Romagnano al Monte was not always dormant. For 20 years it has lay silent after a tragedy that those who live close by still remember. An earthquake hit the thriving village in 1980, claiming over 3000 lives at once and leaving the survivors to pick up the pieces.
When the earthquake hit the survivors decided to relocate to another close by village rather than rebuild their homes. Another village was built 20km away and Romagnano al Monte was left abandoned, now it is just an eerily silent mix of ancient ruins with small traces of the people who were left behind.

The Ghost’s of the Ghost Town
Not much is known about this location as it was forbidden to enter for years, due to dangers around the falling structures. However, many people have been seen wandering around the streets.
This is a bit of a tourist hotspot today, surprise surprise. But, many tourists have reported being guided around the city by a mysterious old women speaking in thick Italian and gesturing for the people to follow. The local government do not acknowledge her existence, there are no licenced tour guides as of yet. Not only that she seems to vanish into thin air when some people have simply blinked or turned around.
There are many others seen walking the streets of this abandoned haven, dressed in traditional clothing but they seem to pay no notice to the modern strangers. Is Romagnano al Monte haunted? Only you can decide, regardless of this, what an incredible place!!!
